Whitney Johnson, a 26-year-old mother from Kentucky, fell asleep on the couch with her two-year-old son, DJ, and his five-week-old daughter Nyla.

The backup heater exploded in flames while the family was asleep, but the smoke detector did not work properly. It was DJ who woke up first and he screamed his mom's name until she woke up. But the living room was already surrounded by flames.

Whitney took her son by the hand and her baby in the other arm and ran to the front door to escape. But she had to let go of DJ's hand for a few seconds to unlock the main door. The toddler, frightened, ran to his room at the other end of the house and hid himself after slamming the door.

The mother made the decision to take out her baby first. Nyla already had the top of her head a little burned. She did not want to risk bringing her back inside. Whitney left her daughter in the hands of her neighbors who watched helplessly and returned to her home.

Whitney did not manage to join DJ in all this smoke. She did not even manage to open the door. The kid called his mother and he called for help, but no one could get to him. He died intoxicated by the smoke after taking refuge in his bed.

"DJ is my hero," Whitney told the media, crying. "If it were not him, we would all be dead."

The mother also has another 8-year-old, Braylen, who was not there the night of the fire.

Since the fire, Whitney has been educating people about the importance of having an emergency plan at home and informing children about what to do in the event of a fire,
